IUCN

INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE

UICN is a membership Union composed of both government and civil society organisations.

It provides public, private and non-governmental organizations with the knowledge and tools they need to ensure that human progress, economic development and nature conservation come together in harmony.

Founded in 1948, IUCN has grown over the years to become the largest and most diverse environmental network in the world. It counts with the experience, the resources and the weight of its more than 1300 member organizations and the skills of more than 16 000 experts. It is a leading provider of conservation data, assessments and analysis. Its size allows it to play the role of incubator and reliable reference of good practices, tools and international standards.

IUCN provides a neutral space where diverse stakeholders - governments, NGOs, scientists, businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples groups, charities and others - can work together to develop and implement solutions to address environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development.

Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a broad and diverse portfolio of conservation-related projects around the world. Combining the most advanced scientific knowledge and traditional knowledge of local communities, these projects aim to stop habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve people's well-being.

THE AGREEMENT ON THE CONSERVATION OF CETACEANS OF THE BLACK SEA, MEDITERRANEAN SEA AND CONTIGUOUS ATLANTIC AREA (ACCOBAMS)

ACCOBAMS is a legal conservation tool based on cooperation. It is the first agreement on cetacean conservation that commits the countries of these sub-regions to work together on an issue of general interest.

It was created under the auspices of the Bonn Convention (UNEP/CMS) and is the result of a consultation between the Secretariats of four conventions:

  • The Barcelona Convention for the protection of the Marine Environnement and the Coastal Region of the Meditearrean and its Protocol concerning Specially Protected Area and Biological Diversity in the Meditarrean;

  • The Bonn Convention on the Conservation of the Migratory Species of Wild Animals;

  • The Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats;

  • The Bucharest Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution.

ACCOBAMS was signed  on November 24th 1996 and entered into force on June 1st 2001. The Permanent Secretariat is hosted by the Principality of Monaco through a headquarters agreement.

Founded in 2010, Oceaneye is a non-profit organization based in Geneva, made up of different and complementary personalities. The objectives, we are focusing on, are:

  • Provide information and raise global awareness on the threats of oceans’ plastic pollution;

  • Contribute to scientific research by collecting data, helping and supporting the work of the scientific community.

These two approaches represent the foundation of our work which aims to understand and bring attention to the consequences of our unsustainable lifestyle related to the overproduction and consumption of plastic materials in our daily lives. Considering the lack of detailed information and the blurry understanding of the problem, it is our priority to quantify the impact of plastic in aquatic ecosystems and to create a heightened familiarity with the problem. It is essential to promote a scientific approach which will provide reliable data to support efficient measures to tackle this issue.

World Cetacean Alliance (WCA),

the world’s largest marine conservation partnership.

The WCA believes in protecting both human and cetacean communities, and their environments, from the detrimental impacts of tourism.

The WCA campaigns and advocates for change in these situations, particularly in places where there is evidence that tourism is having an impact on cetacean populations, especially isolated populations and threatened species.
