GREEN TURTLES

Green turtle conservation project

Support the village n'droude in its fight against poaching

THE CHELONIA MYDAS TURTLE

The green turtle Chelonia mydas is one of seven species of seriously threatened turtles in the world. Although it is fully protected internationally and listed under CITES (or the Washington Convention), poaching is one of the main causes of its scarcity.

The project is located in the Comoros Archipelago on the Mozambique Channel (Indian Ocean), more precisely in the North of the island of Grande Comore, near the village of N'Droudé and on the turtle islet. Formerly a spawning ground, the green turtles that come to lay eggs at N'Droudé have little chance of returning alive at sea; they are often poached before they even have time to bury their eggs in the sand.

The NGO Ulanga ngazidja is a pioneer in environmental conservation in the Commores, like Dr Said Hassani, who has been working for more than 35 years for the conservation, protection, rational management and valorization of the environment in the Commores.

Ulanga is also a network of more than 30 village environmental associations. These village associations are participatory and community-based in nature, contributing to community awareness, commitment and participation in environmental protection.

In 2014, the N'Droudé area was annexed to the marine protected areas protection project jointly led by the Union of Comoros, the Gef (Global Environment Facility) and the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme). This decision is very encouraging because it aims to protect the environment of Grande Comore and its marine ecosystems.

This project, which is the subject of this application, is in line with this vast project for a marine protected area in the region.

The actions recommended for the protection of the green turtle are crucial but do not have funding, which is why SCS continues to be involved with its partner.
